debian 5 troubles

Anyone know what's going on with the debian 5 (lenny) image and how to work around it? For example I cannot use aptitude because it spits out errors.

If I try to install postfix it will literary break other packages because it will cause these type of errors:

dpkg: error processing ssl-cert (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of postfix:
postfix depends on ssl-cert; however:
Package ssl-cert is not configured yet.
dpkg: error processing postfix (--configure):
dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
Errors were encountered while processing:
ssl-cert
postfix

I think the usual cause of package installation errors such as these are related to lack of memory in a low mem config, especially on openvz where the memory limits are hard, so when it runs out the process just dies hard and fast.

What's your platform, openvz or xen?
What's your current ram / disk usage?
Which debian image did you install? I recall reading of problems with one of them recently (no ssh facility, or some such).

What errors do you get from aptitude? Can you post them to give us a hint?

If you do determine lack of ram to be the cause, try stopping any non-essential services while you install, or reconfiguring them for the lowest possible ram footprints.

Our template developers have been asked to take another look at our Debian 5 Xen templates - should anyone encounter this issue in the meantime, here is the workaround:

• mkdir /etc/ssl/private (This directory must be created to remove the ssl-cert package)
• apt-get remove ssl-cert
• apt-get install ssl-cert (Ensure installation completes successfully)
• apt-get install postfix
