Exclamation Webmin & Virtualmin Help Please

Hi everyone!

I've got the VPS Link-3 package and think that this is an incredible service (highly recommended for anyone still "thinking about it").

I'm having difficulty setting up Virtualmin (GPL) and hope that someone could please help me to figure out what's wrong. I've attempted to set it up in Fedora 5 lamp, Fedora 5, Ubuntu, and CentOS 4, but keep encountering the same problem each time I've tried it, so I know that it is not an OS related problem, but something else.

Installing Webmin is easy. Absolutely no problem there.

Then I install Virtualmin, and again the install is very easy.

The problem comes when I try to load up Virtualmin for initial configuration. It says there is some problem with MYSQL & Webalizer, then the log files. I'm sure mysql & webalizer are running, and don't know why version 7.3.7 of logfiles wouldn't be acceptable. Bottom line is that I can't get Virtualmin happy enough to start and have been beating my head against the wall trying to figure out why.

Has anyone actually managed to get Virtualmin (GPL) up & running in VPS? If so what's the "secret"?

Can someone try a fresh install of a VPS OS (any OS you prefer, preferably Fedora or CentOS) then install webmin (obviously the prerequisite) then Virtualmin to see the problem I'm talking about?

I hope that someone could post the solutions to getting virtualmin (GPL) so that of course I could be grateful to you, but I'm sure that this thread could become a good reference thread for setting up Virtualmin (GPL) for everyone here using VPS.

Thank you in advance for your help on the matter.

Ice & Sun

Exact errors would be helpful.

Have you checked log files? There's almost inevitably something of interest in one or more of them.

Well actually the "error" is viewed from within Webmin, and it says something to the effect of "that it's either not installed or configured properly, therefore Virtualmin can not continue" (abort). That's pretty much what it says (paraphrased). I know that it is installed and that the server is running, and even in webmin clicking on that server I can play around with the config, but don't see what the problems would be.

BTW, this is all after a fresh OS reinstall. All I do is make sure that the server service is running before I continue with the virtualmin install.

Why not try it on a VPS if you've got a chance. I've tried like 7 or 8 times already, on various OS, and all pretty much the same.

BTW, thanks for having replied requesting more details, and I'm sorry that I can't be of much more help.

Here is copied & pasted what it says...

The status of your system is being checked to ensure that all enabled features are available, that the mail server is properly configured, and that quotas are active ..

BIND DNS server is installed.

Mail server Sendmail is installed and configured.

Apache is installed.

MySQL does not appear to be installed and running on your system, or has not yet been set up properly in Webmin's MySQL Database module. If your system does not use MySQL, it should be disabled in Virtualmin's module configuration page.

.. your system is not ready for use by Virtualmin.

Disabled MySQL and now this is what I get...

The status of your system is being checked to ensure that all enabled features are available, that the mail server is properly configured, and that quotas are active ..

BIND DNS server is installed.

Mail server Sendmail is installed and configured.

Apache is installed.

Logrotate is installed.

No Ethernet interface could be automatically found on your system. Use the module configuration page to set the interface manually.

.. your system is not ready for use by Virtualmin.

***** From Me again: I have no ideas what to do to fix this "ethernet interface", and I have no idea what problem(s) I might encounter after this point in the process of getting virtualmin working. If someone could do a nice little "how to" on how to get virtualmin up & working period that would be fantastic. Thanks in advance.

Should be venet0. You'll have to manually set that as it says, though.

As I said in your other thread, though, VPSLink is fully unmanaged. You'll have to do some research on your own to get things working. Some people here can help you out, but that doesn't mean that the users have all the answers. As with any server, there is effort and trial and error. You can't expect someone to sit down and immediately write a "howto" just because you request it. If anything, you might want to spend the time, ask minor questions here as they come up, do some research (google really is your best friend) and then write the howto yourself, and provide it back to the community.

Make sure you have set a mysql root password, and that webmin 'knows' this password.
