    [oops missed the last two posts about gcc/g++]

    Try build-essentials, it is a metapackage for several "essential packages for building things" ;-P You should be able to find a basic compiler tutorial for ubuntu that would be applicable to your distribution. Have you checked with apt to see if the program you desire to compile is pre-packaged? Even if you had to compile a debian source package, it would likely be more simple than your approach, because the necessary build dependencies would be automagically satisfied.
