    Default VPSLink Shared Debian Repository

We would like to announce a testing phase for our new shared Debian 3.1 / 4.0 repository cache at VPSLink

The VPSLink Debian Repository is now available for all to use (all thanks should go to SomeoneE1se for building and maintaining the repository cache).

If you may be interested in speeding up all things apt-related, simply comment out the default entry in your /etc/apt/sources.list file and add an entry for the cache:

    Debian 3.1

    Code:
    # deb http://ftp.freenet.de/debian sarge main contrib non-free
deb http://debrepo.mirror.vpslink.com/debian sarge main contrib non-free
    deb http://security.debian.org sarge/updates main contrib non-free
    Debian 4.0

    Code:
    # deb http://ftp.freenet.de/debian etch main contrib non-free
deb http://debrepo.mirror.vpslink.com/debian etch main contrib non-free
    deb http://security.debian.org etch/updates main contrib non-free
Any issues observed while using the repository should be posted back to this thread - we will update our Debian templates to make use of the cache in the near future.

I've tested this and It is INSANELY fast. My system (a production system) is already using it.

Isn't it a good timing to make a shared gentoo portage tree too?

I have talked with our systems administrators about the possibility - we are waiting on hardware for a dedicated repository server before we proceed, so stay tuned for more information on a shared Gentoo portage tree.

The VPSLink Shared Debian Repository has been tested thoroughly, has performed extremely well, and is now live.

You may wish to update your /etc/apt/sources.list file to reference the debrepo.mirror.vpslink.com hostname (this hostname will remain the same, should the internal repository's IP change).

    Debian 3.1

    Code:
    # deb http://ftp.freenet.de/debian sarge main contrib non-free
deb http://debrepo.mirror.vpslink.com/debian sarge main contrib non-free
    deb http://security.debian.org sarge/updates main contrib non-free
    Debian 4.0

    Code:
    # deb http://ftp.freenet.de/debian etch main contrib non-free
deb http://debrepo.mirror.vpslink.com/debian etch main contrib non-free
    deb http://security.debian.org etch/updates main contrib non-free

Default don't use "stable" in sources.list

It is recommended by debian that you don't use "stable" in /etc/apt/sources.list but instead use a specific release name such as "etch" "sarge" or "lenny". The reason is that "stable" will some day change, then all of the sudden your sources.list is going to be pointing to a release which you haven't installed. If you start installing packages from the wrong release, you will most likely soon be starting to have dependency issues. Instead, point to "etch", then once lenny becuase stable, you can upgrade to lenny when you are ready to. You have 1 year of support on etch once lenny releases.

Are debian "updates" available at debrepo.mirror.vpslink.com?

No, the vpslink debian mirror does not seem to be not update to date. For the last two weeks aptitude update followed by aptitude full-upgrade found no updates.

Today after I changed /etc/apt/sources.list from
    Code:
deb http://debrepo.mirror.vpslink.com/debian lenny main contrib non-free
    to
    Code:
deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ lenny main contrib non-free
aptitude update followed by aptitude upgrade returned 110 updates.

Please wait while I look into this, I will post back when I find the cause.

Also if you need the latest and greated update you source.list as kurtk did but it's not needed for security as long have you have

deb Debian -- Security Information stable/updates main contrib non-free

    uncommented in your sources.list
