Default Tutorial - Installing xampp for linux

Hey i thought id put up this tutorial for anybody that needs a quick solution to installing a fully featured webhost.

This tutorial will help you to install Apache, MySQL, PHP & PEAR, Perl, ProFTPD, phpMyAdmin, OpenSSL, GD, Freetype2, libjpeg, libpng, gdbm, zlib, expat, Sablotron, libxml, Ming, Webalizer, pdf class, ncurses, mod_perl, FreeTDS, gettext, mcrypt, mhash, eAccelerator, SQLite and IMAP C-Client.

    All with one easy setup.

First of all your going to need to download the latest version of xampp,
    - Login to your vps as "root"
    - Enter the /opt directory by typing
    Code:
    cd /opt
    - Download the setup by typing
    Code:
    wget http://www.apachefriends.org/download.php?xampp-linux-1.5.4a.tar.gz
    - After the download has finished, extract the archive by typing
    Code:
    tar xzf xampp-linux-1.5.4a.tar.gz
    - xampp is now installed on your system
    - to start xampp type the following
    Code:
    /opt/lampp/lampp start
You can now visit your site and you should see the xampp project page.

You may want to drop a copy of this into the wiki if you get a chance.

just a note, the website for the 'additional help' is apachefriends.ORG not .com. The .com version looks kinda sketchy...

Sorry this is the 3rd post. But when i go to my site it dont go to index.php it goes to /xampp/ I've changed it so it shouldn't. I've also uploaded a new index.php with all my stuff on it. And it still forwards to /xampp/

    Thanks.

I think the default xampp installation puts in a index.htm file with a meta redirect - not sure, but I think so. Have you checked that? If nothing else, try renaming your xampp directory.

I have Debian Lenny and used to use XAMPP on Windows, but decided to move to Linux.

    I downloaded the xampp tar

    Saving to: `xampp-linux-1.5.4a.tar.gz.1'

    100%[================================================== ====================================>] 52,531,004 2.34M/s in 23s

    and then untar'd it

    and to make sure

    71442:~/opt# ls
    lampp xampp-linux-1.5.4a.tar.gz

but when I run the command to start xampp i get

    71442:~/opt# /opt/lampp/lampp start
-bash: /opt/lampp/lampp: No such file or directory
