Default is there a dns record "how to" out there?

I'm a n00b to linux administration, but have been coding for over 15 years...

I have no clue what to do to set up the dns records for my site. I just set up a link-4 with Ubuntu and installed php, apache2, mysql and have a domain pointing at the ns1.vpslink.com and ns2.vpslink.com nameservers, and added the domain in my.vpslink.com, but have no clue what records i need for web hosting and email (not even sure what email app to install).

Any help or links would be awesome!

    Default

    Actually I figured it out...

i created a cname record for *.domain.com. (with the trailling '.') then created an A record for domain.com. (with the trailing '.') then another A record with www.domain.com. (with the trailing '.') and now my site works.

    man it feels good
